Most of us first became familiar with stunning Beijing National Stadium back in 2008, when it was built for the Olympic Games in China. Opening and closing ceremonies were held there, as well as many track and field events. Upon first seeing the modern design of the building, many people were mesmerized by the bold, unique twists and turns of its outer structure. The building was then nicknamed the “bird’s nest”.

The stadium is one of the world’s largest enclosed spaces, and also one of the largest steel structures. Its highly-recognizable, iconic structure is considered to be a not only a great architectural achievement, but an inspiration to other designers as well.

Complex geometric theories have been used to produce these new and exciting lighting fixtures, just as with the design of fabulous stadium. Take a peek at the similarities, then bring this fabulous and iconic style to your home.

To create a charming and inviting outdoor space, try using natural shapes and colors in the elements you incorporate into your design plans, such as with the lighting you select. Basic, simple, natural shapes such as leaves, branches, and acorns all exude a comfort and warmth that welcome guests to your outdoor sanctuary. Natural bronze tones and earthy browns are easy to introduce to your garden because they don’t clash with their environment; they compliment it.

You’ve probably heard designers talk about using a “splash” of color when speaking of interior spaces they love. In the garden, however, the “splash” should always be your garden, first; allowing your flowers to create that color burst for you.

Here, you will see a good example of great lighting use in an outdoor space. The fabulous purple clematis and the red entryway are all the color you need – but the anchor enhancement is the fabulous acorn-shaped outdoor light in bronze finish.

The pineapple has a colorful history from early Colonial times as a symbol of hospitality and welcome. To give a pineapple as a gift conveyed graciousness to the recipient.

Christopher Columbus first discovered the pineapple in Guadeloupe in 1493. Fresh pineapple was such a rare delicacy that only special guests would be presented with the delectable fruit. Designs using pineapples in the home were considered a symbol of luxury because they were still such a rare delicacy. Used in architecture and as ornament on pottery, furniture, textiles, and on home entryways, the pineapple greeted guests symbolizing warmth, friendliness, and hospitality. The pineapple was also used as the crowning centerpiece for large presentations of food for the wealthy at their dining tables.

New England sea captains would even place a pineapple symbol outside their homes as a symbol for safe return from their perilous trade routes to the Caribbean or the Pacific. Today, many Americans decorate their homes with pineapple elements, although they may not know the history of their meaning.

Now that you know more, you can proudly display the pineapple in your own retreat. These charming, beautifully-detailed designs bring the warm and welcoming allure to your garden path or walkway. Remember the pineapple’s historic roots as the symbol of hospitality and gracious welcome, and enjoy these beauties for years to come!

Historically, Prairie School style has been associated with architects as Frank Lloyd Wright; who used long lines, tones and materials found in nature to design his famous structures in the early 20th Century. Related in part to the earlier Arts and Crafts movement, Prairie School was more a mid-west style, with highly-crafted woodwork and elongated lines. Windows were grouped together – and made a patterned statement that is indicative of the style.

The Prairie House Collection of outdoor lights is the perfect way to bring the elegance and craftsmanship of the Prairie School style to your patio, entryway, or any outdoor area. Discover the connection to our early 20th Century architectural roots – and enjoy!

A STANDOUT IN ANY ROOM

Are you an antique lover? A history buff? Love Louisiana style? This one’s for you! Historically, belt-driven ceiling fans have been around for about a hundred years, and were hugely popular for their unique style. They were certainly functional; they cooled the air, but they were also very noisy. You may have seen examples of belt-driven fans in many early westerns films, as well as in luxury homes and establishments, mostly in the south. The style is eye-catching and fabulous.

We are proud to bring you the Bourbon Street Ceiling Fan. This fan is belt-driven, but with new technology making it highly-desirable today. Neoprene belting, sealed ball bearings, and other modern improvements have made this design a true standout for almost any environment. It is quiet, efficient, and durable. The design is pure Louisiana – French influenced. Finely-detailed scrollwork adds to the interest of these pieces, making a unique silhouette that is sure to impress. It not only has historic significance, it is a truly charming addition for the more traditional or transitional home; perfect for a family room, game room, bar area, hotel, or restaurant. For larger areas, operate additional fans with the gearless drive motor.

Satisfy the antique lover in you!

In 1942, a children’s story was written about a little red lighthouse that watched a huge gray bridge built right next to him. His light and bell always provided a valuable service to the boat traffic in the river, keeping them safe. The new bridge (probably the George Washington Bridge in New York) towered over the little lighthouse, making him feel unimportant, But, in the end, he proved to be of great importance, and his self-esteem returned.

At LitesPlus, we discovered these beautifully crafted outdoor lanterns that are similar in design to real lighthouse lanterns. Their fit and finish are superior to their ancestors, and they provide just the right amount of bling. Perfect for any outdoor garden and patio area, these clean-line designs will bring you a bit of the nautical and remind you of the lighthouse!

WHAT IS IT . . . Sea Glass? Beach Glass?

Ripple Glass? Waterglass?

We found many people are confused about several glass terms. We delved into each, and here’s the lowdown.

Beach Glass and Sea Glass

Beach glass and sea glass are basically the same thing. We are instantly drawn to these transluscent stones with their soothing properties in beautiful natural colors of the sea – aquas, turquoise and seafoam greens. Today, we reproduce stones artificially for adorning many of our homes and businesses.

Ripple Glass

This type of glass is more of a created, patterned texture, used in industry glass and plastic, as well as products for the home, housewares, and decor.

Waterglass

Early glassworker Bormioli Rocco established his glassworks in Parma in 1825 and was an early master of the waterglass wave technique. The wavy texture within the glass helps to create an intriguing focal point for any environment.

Waterglass style is found today in, for example, the Montecito Collection of outdoor lights. In the yard, these glass delights are quickly noticed by passers-by.

Fine examples of waterglass in today’s lighting can be found at Lites Plus Online
